Developing Your NDIS Plan

One of the main responsibilities of an Ndis Planner is to help participants create a detailed NDIS plan that outlines their goals and support needs. The planning process usually begins when the NDIA contacts you to arrange a meeting. During this meeting, you will work with a Ndis planner or local area coordinator to discuss your short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals. These goals should reflect your personal aspirations and consider the types of support that will help you achieve them.

The Ndis planner then develops a plan tailored to your needs that may include informal support (family and friends), community or government services, and funded support. If you use a Ndis support coordinator, choose someone knowledgeable about the Ndis who can explain the system clearly and assist with managing your budget. Working closely with your Ndis planner and Ndis support coordinator helps you make the most of your plan, achieve your goals, and engage more fully in your community.

Coordinating Services and Supports

Ndis Planners play a key role in connecting participants with the right service providers and ensuring support is delivered smoothly. They coordinate with various providers, monitor service quality, and address any issues that may arise, filling gaps to provide a seamless level of care.

When reviewing an Ndis plan, participants look at their goals, the support they currently have, and how their funding is allocated. Plans outline goals, funded support categories, and how those funds can be used — some participants may have just a few categories, while others have several.

Plan managers also support participants by managing their budgets, paying invoices, setting up service agreements, and helping them make the most of their funding. Together, Ndis planners and plan managers ensure participants can access the right services, use their funds wisely, and achieve their goals efficiently.

Reviewing and Updating Your NDIS Plan

NDIS plan reviews are scheduled near the end of a participant’s funding period and can be done in person, over the phone, or via video call. During the review, the participant, their family or carer, and relevant service providers assess current support and progress toward short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals.

Participants can also decide how to manage their funding — either self-managing their plan or using a plan manager. Self-management gives more control but requires more time and paperwork, while plan managers handle payments and help manage the budget.

Plan reviews are ongoing, and Ndis planners work with participants to update the plan as needs, goals, and circumstances change. This ensures support continues to meet the participant’s evolving needs and aspirations.

Advocacy and Support

Ndis planners act as strong advocates for participants, ensuring their needs and preferences are heard within the NDIS system. They provide guidance during appeals or complaints and offer information and resources to help participants make informed decisions about their support and care.

Ndis planners also assist participants in understanding how to access services, including different funding options — self-managed, agency-managed, or plan-managed — and the costs involved. They help identify the supports, service providers, or equipment a participant may need, often gathering information about how the disability impacts daily life to create a personalised plan.

Having the right support coordination is essential to ensure a plan is used effectively. If a participant’s plan is not being fully utilised, it may indicate the need for additional support coordination, which can be addressed through an NDIA review or an Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) review.
